Hyper-heuristics have emerged as a set of approaches with the main motivation of automating the design and control of heuristic methods to solve hard computational search problems from different problem domains. The origins of such approaches can be traced back to 1960s. The term 'hyper-heuristic' is a coined word and initially used to refer to the idea of "heuristics to choose heuristics". As the research field has grown further, a new type of hyper-heuristics (e.g., genetic programming) has emerged as we refer to "heuristics to generate heuristics". This talk covers the previous classifications of hyper-heuristics and presents a new classification with case studies.
